Trane DRV-102 Variable Speed Compressor Drive
Trane, Trane Variable Speed Compressor Drive, DRV, DRV-102, speed controller, heat pump, air conditioner, variable speed heat pump, variable speed dc controller,1980,variable capacity

Pictured below are several shots of the Trane DRV-102 Variable Speed Compressor Drive. The DRV -102 below is meant for the Trane (5) Ton Heat Pump Model TWS760A100A1. We can get other versions - just give us a call at (303) 669-3876 Mon-Fri 8:00 A.M.-4:30 P.M. Mountain Time. This particular unit sells for a whopping $1,895.00! This is a very complicated D.C. unit which gives the signals to the indoor and outdoor variable speed operation. It takes normal alternating current, and through the use of rectifiers, changes it to D.C. it should only be installed by a qualified Trane Dealer who is familiar with these old Variable Speed units. These are special order items and NON RETURNABLE!

The operating principle of these older units were to use a single compressor, but to have it have a variable speed, going from a very slow speed to a maximum speed depending on the needs of the building and based on the outdoor temperature. This is an over simplification but we think you will get the idea.

In the late '80s, Trane pursued variable speed systems, (variable capacity ) which used variable speed motors on the compressor and both indoor and outdoor fans, yielding a 4 to 1 capacity range. They used these on central air conditioners as well as heat pumps. The system was very comfortable and quiet, but provided technical challenges regarding installation and servicing. More importantly, the system had some power quality issues regarding inrush current on power-up and also with the power factor it represented to the utility. Faced with redesigning the product to achieve power factor correction, Trane chose another path.

Dropping variable speed, the company developed a unit that uses two separate compressors, one for low, one for high. This system was originally dubbed the XL1800. The XL 1800, which achieved 18.0 SEER for the air conditioner and 17.65 SEER/8.50 HSPF on the heat pump version. That concept can still be found on Trane's ultra high-efficiency units of today known now as the XLi19.5. This newest system is, to date, the highest SEER rating on the market!
