The most common cause of coils freezing up is from being low on refrigerant. Freon doesn't evaporate or otherwise need replacement unless there is a leak. This will require an H.V.A.C. Service call. The refrigerant leak must be repaired before re charging with freon. Other reasons include a dirty indoor coil, and poor air flow from dirty filters, closed registers or too small a blower motor and / or poor ductwork.
Do you have poor air flow due to poor duct work, or too small of a furnace blower motor which is causing your air conditioning evaporator coil to constantly t freeze up? Here is the cheapest way around this problem.
This freezestat mounts in the largest refrigerant line close to your indoor evaporator coil. Cut back the black insulation on the large line. Sandpaper the copper so that is clean, mount this control and attach with the included clamp, find the thermostat wires that go out to your out door unit and cut one of them.( You probably will have to get a small section of (2) conductor thermostat wire, and a few small wire nuts, from Home Depot or Lowes ) Connect one of the wires on this control to one of the ends you just cut, install the other end of the wire you just cut to the other wire on this control. Use wire nuts on the wire splices. Re insulate over the whole control so that it is sensing the temperature of the line with our Insulation found under the Air Conditioning link or click here Ref. Line Insulation.
The Freezestat will open the circuit when it senses 35 degrees and close again when the line temperature reaches 55 degrees. Your air conditioner or heat pump will cycle off while the ice melts ( usually a few minutes ) once the line temperature again hits 55 degrees the out door unit will re start.
