DUAL RATED ROUND COMPRESSOR CAPACITORS

All these capacitors are round and have terminals for the compressor and the condenser fan motor.
They are rated at 370 and 440 Volts.

Pictured below are several different styles of capacitors.
The (2) center ones are typical dual rated round capacitors.

Dual rated capacitors have a "C" ( common terminal ) a "Herm" or H terminal which is for the compressor
and a "Fan" or F terminal which is for the condenser fan motor.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Change your air conditioning or Heat Pump Compressor capacitor if it is bulged, leaking, has loose or corroded terminals or whenever you have a compressor changed. Lightning strikes are the prime cause of a bad capacitor. Many compressors have been changed when it was the capacitor that was bad. Be sure all power to unit is off at breakers and discharge the capacitor by grounding all terminals out against a metal part of the cabinet using an insulated screwdriver, (make sure you are holding only the insulated part or you will get shocked) before touching any terminals. If your capacitor is leaking do not touch this liquid as it is toxic. Dispose of any capacitor responsibly. Remember you are working with 230 Volts. If unsure please have an HVAC Company do the work!

Capacitors hold a charge to give a starting torque to the next time your compressor starts, therefore if the capacitor is faulty you won't get the proper starting torque! This same charge will give a nasty shock if the capacitor hasn't been discharged properly. It may not kill you but will feel like the shock you would get if you touch an automobile spark plug wire while the vehicle is running - you won't do it twice (:
